What does Asé mean?
Asé is a powerful affirmation in African culture used to manifest self-assurance, strengthen confidence, and welcome positive change.
At Asé Counseling & Empowerment Services, we strive to do just that! Our mission is to assist you on your journey of exploring, accepting, & loving every part of yourself; no matter what you have been through! It is important to validate and honor your unique experiences that brought you to this point.
Paisley Taylor, LCMHC & CEO
“You are not a robot! Your purpose is not to “produce” & be productive all the time…”
I work with adults who aim to achieve everything they put their mind to-you know? The accomplished goal setters, hard workers, & successful members in their family unit. When you are the strongest person in your circle, it can be super frustrating to be expected to keep things together-especially with no one offering any help! You always have to figure things out, overwhelmed & anxious are your default emotions, your work is never done, and you function on two levels: 0 or 100. You may “rest” but you never actually RELAX because you are constantly calling yourself lazy while thinking about all the things you could be doing instead.
Productivity at this capacity involves holding yourself accountable, setting the bar high, and preparing for all possible outcomes, but this can come at an expense. My clients tend to be highly self-critical, goal-crushers, perfectionists, and use statements like “I should be doing ….” when they have down time. Now there is nothing wrong with goal setting or having a plan; but what happens when you aren’t the best version of yourself? Can you still be proud of your progress & efforts? Do you ever celebrate yourself? Do you show self compassion during times when you just don’t have it in you? Do you give yourself grace to be imperfectly you??
If you answered “no” to any of these questions, then we have some work to do!
As an overachiever myself, I understand how the ideal version of yourself can make you feel like who you are now is “just not good enough” & undeserving of a break. It is possible to love who you are (right now at this very moment) and still accomplish your goals without invalidating your journey.
Let’s explore the balance between accomplishments and acceptance so you can be kinder to yourself along the way!
